Institute for Digital Innovation

Our History: Anchoring the Innovation Corridor

The Institute for Digital Innovation (IDIA) was established to serve as the engine of George Mason University’s commitment to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s tech talent pipeline. Born from the energy of the Rosslyn-Ballston Innovation Corridor, IDIA has evolved from a visionary initiative into a physical and intellectual hub that connects Mason’s research capacity with the region’s dynamic digital economy.

The Catalyst (2018–2019)

Following the announcement of Amazon HQ2 in Arlington, Virginia launched the Tech Talent Investment Program (TTIP), a statewide initiative to double the number of graduates in computer science and related fields. George Mason University, under the strategic guidance of then-Vice President for Research Dr. Deborah Crawford, seized this opportunity to not only expand its degree programs but to create a new kind of research institute—one that would dissolve the walls between academia, industry, and government. IDIA was originally meant to be also the name of the building now known as Fuse. Over the years, with the building assuming a larger role within the University campus, IDIA became solely the identifier of the institute.

The Launch (2020)

IDIA was officially launched in June 2020, amidst the global pivot to digital connection driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Founding Leadership: The institute was established under the leadership of Dr. Kammy Sanghera, who served as the Founding Director.
  • The Vision: Dr. Durant, alongside university leadership including President Gregory Washington, defined IDIA’s mission to support the development of the Arlington Innovation District (now Mason Square).
  • Strategic Growth: During this foundational period, Dr. Amarda Shehu served as Associate Vice President of Research for IDIA (2022–2024), playing a critical role in shaping the institute’s interdisciplinary research strategy and fostering human-machine partnership initiatives.

Building the Ecosystem (2020–2025)

Under Dr. Sanghera and Dr. Shehu’s tenure (2020–2025), IDIA grew from a concept into a powerhouse of collaboration.

  • The Entrepreneurial Focus: The institute launched the P3 Faculty Fellowship and solidified partnerships with major industry players, laying the groundwork for a robust innovation ecosystem.
  • Physical Transformation: This era marked the inauguration of Fuse at Mason Square, the physical headquarters designed to house this growing community of innovators.

A New Chapter (2025–Present)

In September 2025, Dr. Massimiliano Albanese was appointed as the new Executive Director of IDIA. Building on the strong foundation laid the previous years, Dr. Albanese brings a vision centered on “collaborative impact”—uniting faculty, students, and external stakeholders to solve complex, real-world challenges.

Today, IDIA stands on the precipice of its next great transformation: the full activation of Fuse at Mason Square, a facility that embodies the institute’s history and its future as a beacon for digital innovation.
